We have not talked too much politics around our house during this election year, for one because we always have listening ears and well you know how that goes. We realized that we had not talked enough when H had a mock election at school and did not know really who was running or who to vote for. We asked her who she voted for and she said that she voted for Obama because he had a better smile than the "other guy". She then proceeded to tell us about a fight that she got into with her good little friend about the candidates. She said that her friend's dad told her friend that Obama will take all of your money. We laughed because we could just envision the family discussion that preceded this thought in this little girls mind. H argued with her friend, not because she knew the candidates position on taxes etc, I think just for the sake of arguing.
Yesterday we came across Obama's picture on tv. H questioned who won because she was fast asleep when the election was over the night before. I took the opportunity to explain how some people were happy with the decision and some are not because it was not what they voted for, but at least they were allowed to vote. H then said in a serious voice, "mom, is he coming to our house soon?" I said "Who?" She looked at me and said, "Obama. Is he coming to our house to take our money soon?" It is amazing to me how a 5 year old mind works. So simple and honest!
